Red art in Margate

Two Kent based artists, Mark John Smith and Tom Swift will be exhibiting their work at Margate’s Crate exhibition on Saturday March 26 and Sunday March 27.

Crate’s ethic of experimentation will be well served by the exhibition, named RED, which focuses on the connection between gallery space and place.

Margate based Swift’s work is constructed on a ‘make and do’ basis and this spontaneity is visible in both his video-art and photographic work.

Smith, who graduated with a first class degree from UCA in 2010, works with sculptures in addition to video installations and photographic work.

The artists share an interest in the everyday and the ‘mundane’ and whilst the works were conceived of and constructed separately, RED is a cohesive venture which invites the viewer to ponder the issues raised.

Both artists like to examine commonplace physical structures in their work and this examination aids the viewer in their reflections on how place influences art and vice-versa.
